Ad
A job listing on a recruitment website, viewed on 16 October 2011, was headlined "Trainee Mortgage Advisor - No Experience Necessary - Up to £28k". Further text stated "The trainee mortgage advisor role does not need to be CeMap qualified as full CeMap training will be provided by the employer".
Issue
The complainant challenged whether the job listing was genuine and therefore whether the ad was misleading, because he had applied for the job and was sent a web link to a training programme.
CAP Code (Edition 12)
Response
Baker Coop Ltd (Baker Coop) challenged whether the full version of the ad was being considered and provided another listing for the ad which also included the text "This programme is ideal for graduates or those interested for [sic] a career in the Financial Sector. The basic salary of £28,000 can be expected after training. For candidates without experience (CeMap qualification) the fee for the training programme is [sic] starts from £1,195. You can pay by instalment if you are successful after the interview stage. Graduates may be eligible for a scholarship to cover part of the fees". They did not specifically respond to the complaint or provide evidence to demonstrate that the listing was genuine.
Assessment
Upheld
The ASA noted Baker Coop believed the website listing had contained additional qualifying text which stated that successful applicants without a CeMap qualification would be required to obtain it through their employers at a cost of £1,195. However, we noted Baker Coop had not provided evidence that this additional text was included in the website ad when it had been viewed by the complainant on 16 October 2011. Furthermore, we noted Baker Coop had not demonstrated that the employment position (with or without the necessary qualification) was genuine. We considered that the headline "Trainee Mortgage Advisor - No Experience Necessary - Up to £28k" alongside the additional information in the ad that was viewed by the complainant, did not make clear that the listed salary did not apply unless CeMap training had been previously obtained or that employees without it would be trained in the qualification by their future employer at their own cost. We therefore concluded that the ad was misleading.
The ad breached CAP Code (Edition 12) rules 3.1 (Misleading advertising), 3.7 (Substantiation) and 20.2 (Employment, homework schemes and business opportunities).
Action
The ad should not appear again in its current form. We told Baker Coop that future ads should make clear where employees were liable for the cost of training.
