More effective, efficient and in tune with our stakeholders - The ASA’s Preliminary Response to the Process Review

24 June 2010

LightbulbThe Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) today published its preliminary response to the Process Review, conducted with the help of independent consultants.

The review looked at the way we perform our core executive functions across the ASA and Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP), namely the:

      • handling and investigation of complaints from the public and competitors
      • proactive monitoring of advertisements
      • enforcement of ASA decisions to ensure compliance
      • provision of pre-publication advice and guidance by the CAP Copy Advice team

The review has helped us identify a number of improvements that we believe will benefit consumers and advertisers by making our operations quicker, more efficient and effective. The recommendations include operational changes, some of which we have begun to implement and others that require further detailed work. Those latter ideas will form part of our final response to the review, which we aim to publish in 2011. Overall, the recommendations have been grouped into five key areas:

  • Investigations
  • Consistency
  • Stakeholder relations
  • Management approach and systems
  • Processes and internal ways of working

The start of the ASA Process Review was announced publicly to allow interested parties to take part and submit their views. In addition, a cross-section of organisations and individuals representing advertisers, policy makers, government departments and consumer groups were directly invited to input to the process. The ASA would like to thank all those who have taken part in the review.
