The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is seeking to recruit three new independent members of its governing Council. The new members, who will be appointed by ASA Chairman Lord Smith of Finsbury, will adjudicate on complaints about potential breaches of the Advertising Codes and oversee the work of the ASA Executive.

The ASA Council comprises 13 members, two-thirds of whom are independent of the advertising industry. We’re encouraging applicants from all walks of life to make sure that we have a Council that’s representative of society and its views.

The ASA Chairman, Lord Smith said that Council members had to make judgements on a wide variety of issues and concerns: “UK advertising is some of the most creative and innovative in the world but, occasionally, it can also polarise opinion. ASA Council has the challenging and fascinating task of making finely balanced decisions as to where the line should be drawn on behalf of society and business.”

Council members serve a maximum of two three-year terms. The successful candidates will be appointed to serve from the beginning of April 2014. Applicants for these appointments must not be, and never have been, engaged in the business of marketing communications. Anyone wishing to be considered for the vacancies should apply via the ASA’s website at: www.asa.org.uk/council.aspx. The closing date for applications is Friday 6 December 2013 at 5pm.
