How to complain

The Advertising Standards Authority works to keep advertising legal, decent, honest and truthful.  The ASA resolves thousands of complaints each year.

The ASA judges advertisements, direct marketing and sales promotions against a set of Codes.

TheASA's rulings are made independently of both government and the advertising industry.

You can complain to us if you

  • think there is something wrong with an advertisement you have seen or heard
  • have difficultly getting goods or a refund for items bought by mail order or through television shopping channels
  • want to stop direct mail from companies sent either by post, fax, text message or e-mail.

To complain simply complete our online complaints form.

IMPORTANT

We are currently experiencing difficulty in downloading ads submitted electronically.  You may of course log your complaint electronically but, until further notice, please send any ads by post.  Here’s how:

Once you’ve completed the form, you’ll receive an e-mail with a reference number.  Please quote this number when you send us the ad so we can match it up with your complaint.  Alternatively, if you have a printer, you can print a copy of the complaint summary and send it with the ad.   You can also e-mail the ad to us as an attachment.  Please send it to new.complaints@asa.org.uk. Again quoting your unique reference number.

First, however, you may want to check we're the right people to complain to.  You may also wish to take the ASA website Guided Tour for Consumers first.

Please ensure you take care in completing the complaints form so that we get the right information we need to deal with complaint and minimize delays.

Do you think an ad was too loud?

We’re in the process of updating our rules about this so there’s no purpose in us investigating complaints along the lines of ‘all ads are too loud’.  Click here for more information.  But if you think a specific ad or ad break was particularly noisy, we can investigate if you give us the details.
