The ASA introduced IPA graduates to the new structure for regulating TV and radio as well as non-broadcast advertising

Delegates at the IPA Graduate Seminars were introduced to the new ASA as the one-stop shop for advertising complaints.  The roles of the two separate CAP committees, CAP (Broadcast) and CAP (Non-broadcast) were also outlined.

After an introduction to the rules for advertising in the UK, with examples of ads that have breached the Codes, delegates were asked to perform the role of the ASA Council and decide if a selection of ads had broken the Codes.  The delegates were then told if they had reached the same decisions as the real ASA Council.

By agreeing to take on the responsibility of broadcast advertising regulation, there has never been a greater need for industry employees to be aware of the advertising standards codes and why they exist to protect consumers and society as well advertisers’ freedom of expression.  Good starting points for any advertiser, agency or media staff who want more information on the rules and the system of advertising regulation in the UK are the ASA and CAP websites www.asa.org.uk and www.cap.org.uk.
