Raising the Stakes: A guide to the new gambling ad rules

14 March 2007

The Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) invites all those involved in gambling advertising to a free  training seminar on the new gambling advertising rules announced on 13 March 2007.  Taking place in Central London on Wednesday 11 April 2007, the training will help all gambling advertisers to ensure that their advertising camapaigns adhere to the stringent rules that have been put in place.

The aim of the training seminar is to guide agencies and marketing professionals through the rules, in order to build their knowledge and understanding, explain how they will be applied and the impact that they will have on gambling advertisements. The session follows on from the popular series of Advice:am morning masterclasses, designed to advise marketing professionals without taking too much time out of the working day.

The announcement of the new rules follow the Gambling Act 2005, which granted certain sectors (such as online gaming) more scope to advertise than at present. Coming into force on 1 September 2007, the rules emphasise the importance of social responsibility in gambling advertising, particularly with regard to protecting the more vulnerable members of society and children. They will be enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) who will administer the codes and respond to public concerns.

Of the event, Director of Communications Claire Forbes, says, “The much-publicised rules on gambling advertising are critical to ensuring a socially responsible approach in advertising. The seminar provides marketing professionals with the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the new rules and their application. Understanding the restrictions now will ensure that advertisers will not contravene the codes later on, helping avoid negative publicity on this particularly sensitive issue.”

To register for the event e-mail events@cap.org.uk  or call Emma Cutting on 020 7492 2125.
