New Advertising Advisory Committee Member Appointed

Rachel Childs has been appointed to the Advertising Advisory Committee. She will take up her role from 1 January 2019 and will be responsible for providing independent, expert advice to the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP), which writes and maintains the Broadcast Advertising Code.

Established in 2005, the AAC ensures that the perspectives and concerns of consumers, viewers and listeners are taken into account when the Code and associated guidance are updated.

Rachel brings considerable experience to the Committee. As a former Junior School Headteacher, she brings extensive experience of working with children and young people. During her last 20 years in education Rachel has also been a teacher, literacy adviser, governor, examiner and child protection officer. She currently works as Head of English for West Berkshire's Medical Tuition Service.

Rachel served for seven years on the ASA Council, between 2011 and 2018, and she currently undertakes regulatory roles with The Portman Group, IPSO and the Department for Transport.

Rachel will succeed Claire Whyley, who served as a member since 2011.

Stephen Locke, AAC Chairman, said, ““Claire has made an excellent contribution in the seven years she has served on the Committee, and we have greatly enjoyed having her as a colleague. On behalf of the Committee, I’d like to offer our warmest thanks. I’d also like to welcome Rachel, whose background and experience will be extremely valuable – we look forward to working with her.”
