The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) shares the concerns of the Riots Communities and Victims Panel on the need to ensure that young people are properly protected from inappropriate advertising.
We will take on board the panel’s recommendations as part of our ongoing commitment to putting the protection of children at the heart of our work. We are already undertaking a number of measures to ensure that our decisions continue to best reflect societal concerns; which include conducting in-depth research into public views, with a particular emphasis on the views of parents and children, on what may constitute harmful advertising.
We also recently launched the ParentPort website with other media regulators – acting to channel the views of parents on advertising to the appropriate authority – and as part of our schools engagement programme, we are producing a number of free education resources for schools, due to be rolled out this summer, to help engage young people on how advertising works and listening to what they have to say. All of this work feeds back into the ASA Council and to CAP to help ensure that our rulings reflect wider public views on advertising.
For more information on how the ASA is acting to protect young people from inappropriate advertising, please read our protecting children Hot Topic.
