As of 1 March 2011, the ASA has regulated marketers’ own websites and non-paid-for space online under their control.  In this document, CAP announced the extension of the remit of its Code that made that possible.  Extending the remit of the CAP Code to marketers’ own websites was a complex exercise.  In recognition of the challenges it presented, CAP used this document to explain how the ASA would regulate online marketing.  It also announced a review period taking place between the date of the announcement and the enforcement date.  During that period, CAP would consider comments from all stakeholders on its extension of remit.

The document:

  • explains CAP's decision to extend the remit of the Code;
  • describes the criteria the ASA will use to make remit decisions;
  • announces the sanctions that will apply in cases of serious or repeated non-compliance; and
  • sets out the changes to the Code that will accompany remit extension on 1 March 2011.
