Today, Ofcom announces the end of the UK’s Video-Sharing Platforms (VSP) regime: the ASA’s role in that has therefore also come to an end.

On 7 December 2021, the ASA announced that it had been designated by Ofcom as the co-regulator for VSP-controlled advertising appearing on UK-regulated VSP services. Following Royal Assent to the Online Safety Act in 2024, the VSP regime entered a transitional period, in preparation for repeal: that transitional period has now ended, and services previously regulated under the VSP regime are now regulated under the Online Safety regime. Advertising carried by VSPs continues to be regulated under the CAP Code, as it was throughout the four-year lifespan of the VSP regime, but no longer with the addition of rules originating in the Communications Act 2003 (as amended). The rules in question have been removed from Appendix 3 to the CAP Code and replaced with a short statement noting repeal of the regime on 25 July 2025.
